Position: Associate Director of Visitor Service and Engagement

Reports To: Executive Director

 

KMAC Museum is a contemporary art museum located in Louisville's historic downtown on Museum Row.  The Museum explores the relationship between art and craft by identifying art as big idea and craft as the intersection between process, materials, and labor.  Our goal is to educate and inspire while promoting a better understanding of art through exhibitions, education, and collections.

General Responsibility: Providing oversight for Visitor Service and Retail shop Employees, in three areas of interaction with the public including programming for Museum visitors, retail space and cafe.  This includes Programs that increase visitor interaction such as public programs that relate to the exhibitions, surveys, sales figures, and management of Museum Store and Visitor Services staff and volunteers.

 

Oversight in the following areas

  • The pursuit of the museum mission, vision, and values

  • Best Museum practices according to the American Alliance of Museums

  • Responsible for Visitor Service Manual

  • Training and supervising informed and cordial Visitor Services and retail staff and volunteers including admissions, sales, member services, visitor surveys, and maintaining statistics on visitation.

  • Daily management, recruitment, training and scheduling of VS staff who work as guides, guards, and art enthusiasts.

  • Oversite on recording and management of visitor and member statistics.

  • Coordinate closely with other Museum departments on visitor information, sales, planning, and merchandising pertaining to the Museum’s Collection and exhibitions, events, educational programming, membership, fundraising, communications, and outside rentals.

  • Interact with the arts community and civic bodies as an advocate for the arts and the Museum.

  • Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

Administration

  • Build a team that fulfills the Museum’s mission.

  • Determine outreach goals for each of the three areas of the VS-Team

  • Create a schedule for all visitor services and retail staff members.

  • Participate in staff conversations and communicate all information regarding policies, exhibitions, and events to VS staff.

  • Communicate issues from VS staff to other staff members such as Education and Curatorial when appropriate.

  • Provide information and update community calendars

  • Follow correct procedures for daily opening and closing of Museum and Café.

  • Build outreach strategies for exhibitions

  • Maintain visitor attendance information including zip codes and members

  • Keep Museum and local attraction printed materials well stocked and current

 

Museum Shop

  • Admin support for Retail Manager with the scheduling of staff.

  • Assist with sales in KMAC Shop

    • Aware of KMAC Shop opening and closing procedures

 

Museum Cafe

  • Admin support for Cafe Assistant Manager who will coordinate with coffee and food vendors to ensure all items are stocked and ready to serve.

  • Review and maintain health codes for café and service kitchen

  • Maintain cleanliness and order at front desk reception hub, café, and Studio 715

  • Help maintain a clean and orderly service kitchen

 

Museum Exhibitions

  • Collaborate with the curatorial team on programming and exhibition-related activities.

  • Greet KMAC visitors and provide information about current exhibits, the building, local attractions, and our mission as an art museum

  • Receive incoming phone calls and provide general information or direct calls to appropriate department/staff

  • Maintain security in all exhibition spaces

  • Engage visitors by actively providing information and tours of exhibitions

  • Report exhibition or facility maintenance issues

  • Maintain visitor attendance information including zip codes and members

  • Keep Museum and local attraction printed materials well stocked and current

  • Perform other receptionist duties as required and monitor the entry for security

  • Maintain cleanliness and order at front desk reception hub, café, and Studio 715

 

Skills:

  • Knowledge of artistic practice and art history

  • Desire in further advancement in art related field.

  • Ability to interact with the public in a welcoming, informative, diplomatic manner

  • Ability to move around gallery spaces

  • Ability to work with point-of-sale software

  • Excellent computer and social media skills

  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal

Position:

Based on Salaried Full-Time; approx 40 hours per week

PTO: 17 days beginning XXXX, 2019;

PTO becomes available three months after the start of employment unless otherwise noted

 

Healthcare Provided through Humana: Museum will pay for 50% of employee health and dental care costs. The employee in choosing the KMAC plan is responsible for 50% of monthly health and Dental care fee deducted from bi-monthly salary.

 

Salary level $33,000- 37,000 depending on experience.
