BASKETRY MOBILE MUSEUM
About This Suitcase
In this mobile museum, students will be introduced to traditional Kentucky basket making. Baskets are typically woven by hand with stiff natural fibers like wood or dried grass. Students will learn about different types of baskets and weaving processes popular in Kentucky, as well as types of baskets made and used around the world. Lesson plans will examine the different uses for baskets and allow students to practice weaving with paper, fiber, yarn, or found materials. Books and included materials explore the ways that traditions like basket weaving are passed down through generations and contemplate the meaning attached to these practices.
