Museum Educator

Reports To: Director of Education

 

Position Summary

The Museum Educator delivers engaging, mission-driven educational experiences that connect visitors of all ages to contemporary art and creative practice. This position facilitates tours, workshops, camps, artist residencies, and community outreach programs while creating welcoming, inclusive learning environments that encourage creativity, critical thinking, and meaningful engagement with art. The Museum Educator helps implement high-quality educational programming both within the museum and throughout the community.

 

General Responsibilities

• Represent KMAC as a teaching professional. 

• Provide a structured educational experience for school and adult groups during museum visits and community outreach.

• Coordinate and implement various public programs for the Education department and community, including workshops, classes, lectures and off-site collaborations

• Correspond with schools, artists, teachers, and other arts organizations

• Maintain working relationships with schools, teachers, and teaching artists

• Maintain filing system and other administrative duties 

• Maintain relationships with other arts organizations

• Participate in professional societies and activities to stay current with museum trends

• Available for some evening and/or weekend events

 

Specific Responsibilities

Execution of Educational Programs

• Lead tours of the exhibitions and teach field trip workshops for grades K-12 at KMAC, as well as occasionally monitor interactive community space

• Conduct workshops and tours for adults.

• Facilitate in the creation and implementation of curricula for field trips and hands-on art workshops wherein student and adult participants create a finished artwork

• Work with contract artists to plan artist-in-residency programs conducted in schools

• Plan and teach Summer, Winter, & Spring Break Art Camps

• Create and Edit Digital Content for YouTube and School Virtual Experiences

• Conduct community outreach art experiences

• Maintain the KMAC art studio

​Administration and Logistics

• Provide supply lists for art camp, field trip, & community outreach projects

• Work with the Education Coordinator to Schedule and Confirm experiences

• Coordinate with School Teachers on Special Projects

• Support artists who provide Artist in Residency programs

• Use Google Calendar and Google Drive for scheduling and documentation of education programs 

 

Communication and Outreach

• Photo documentation of education and programming events for archives and various media outlets (blog, social media, grant fulfillment)

• Establish and work with local organizations, individuals and institutions to extend Museum Education services to a wider community

• Identify and attend events where the community learns about KMAC Museum programs and exhibitions

 

Additional Museum Support

• Occasional front reception duty working to ensure a positive visitor experience

• Assist with the facilitation of museum special events (after-hours).

 

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in art, arts education, or education

• Two or more years of experience in art education or education

• Understanding of core academic and art standards and ways visual art address these standards

• Working knowledge in 3 or more of the following media: clay (either hand building or wheel-throwing), printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture, fiber arts, woodworking.

• Experience with classroom management

• Ability to assess priorities, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and work well under pressure

• Ability and desire to work with diverse populations in Louisville and surrounding communities

• Strong oral and written communication skills

• Proficiency in using MS Office products (WORD, Excel, and PowerPoint) 

• Ability to work with co-workers, volunteers and the public in a positive, professional manner 

• Willing to consent to a CAN and FBI background check, and attain CPR/First Aid Certification within first 4 weeks of employment at KMAC

 

Salary Range: $38,000 – 41,000
