Crafting in Miniature

November 21st, 2025 - February 1st, 2026

Vernissage, An Exhibition Preview Series: Friday, November 21st, 5-8pm

Architectural models, dollhouses, and small-scale tableaux are miniature worlds that unlock new physical and psychological insights into how we might navigate, imagine, and fantasize the structures of our built environments. Over the summer, KMAC Contemporary Art Museum put out a call for artists working in miniature. After an overwhelming response, just over 40 artists were selected whose small scale works communicate big ideas.

Through manipulations in scale, the model builder or miniaturist can turn our seemingly banal realities into enchanting worlds that awaken our most outlandish fantasies, imbuing our imagined and real surroundings with a sense of wonder and excitement. They are made from all the same materials as our full-scale lives, constructed out of wood, plastic, paper, metal, cardboard, clay, or anything else a builder can use to create form and stability.

Expanding the definition of miniature beyond the traditional dollhouse, Crafting in Miniature looks at the ways in which the size of an artwork can impact the relationship between the viewer and the object. Whether dollhouses, architectural models, or small artworks, the pieces in the exhibition evoke nostalgia, wonder, and excitement for the world around us while providing commentary on our past, present, and future.
