Artist Bio
Taylor Sanders often works with found objects, repurposing them to embody and reflect upon pivotal moments in Black history. Rather than focusing on the objects’ original functions, she reshapes their meaning to evoke connections to slavery, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights movement, and mass incarceration. Through this transformation, Sanders creates sculptural works that merge personal experience with collective memory, asking viewers to confront how these histories continue to resonate in the present.
Her goal is to create artwork that is visually captivating through the use of color, texture, and scale, occupying space both physically and emotionally. Text often appears in her work to articulate ideas directly, while interactive and immersive elements encourage viewers to actively engage with the narrative. In her current work, Sanders turns to the politics of Black hair, using sculpture to examine beauty culture, consumerism, and the systemic pressures placed on Black women. These works expose the contradictions of the beauty industry while affirming hair as a powerful site of identity, resistance, and care.
