Artist Bio
Jessica Beels is a mixed media sculptor and installation artist working in Louisville, KY,
whose work often addresses scientific themes and how humans perceive and interact
with the natural world. Recent projects have explored climate change, microscopic
marine organisms, and the mathematics of biological growth processes. A central body
of work over the past three decades has incorporated handmade overbeaten paper (flax
or abaca) shrunk over wire armatures. Jessica has an undergraduate degree in art history (Harvard University) and a master’s degree in Early American Decorative Arts (University of Delaware Winterthur Program). Her applied art training includes courses at the Corcoran School of Art (Washington, DC), Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (Deer Isle, ME), and Penland School of Crafts (Penland, NC), as well as extensive involvement in technical theater.
