Artist Bio
Mary Carothers is an interdisciplinary artist whose work examines the relationship between the natural world, perception, and memory. Working with materials drawn from specific landscapes, she creates works that document process and place while bridging the familiar with the unexpected. Her practice considers the consequences of progress on ecological systems, inviting reflection on what is perceived as truthful or illusory within environments shaped by constant change. Carothers received her BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. She is the recipient of an Outstanding Public Art Award from Americans for the Arts and an international merit award from COD+A. Her work is held in the collections of 21c Art Museum and The Great Meadows Estate, and she has received grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women, Metro United Way, Humana, and The Great Meadows Foundation, among others. She has participated in artist residencies at Galeri Svalbard in the Arctic, ChaNorth in New York’s Hudson Valley, Makers Circle in North Carolina’s Appalachian Mountains, the Montana Artists Refuge, and Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy. Based in Louisville, Kentucky, Carothers is a professor at the University of Louisville’s Hite Institute of Art & Design.
