Sandra Charles: The Reality of Our Essence

A Louisville-based artist known for her bold style, Sandra Charles exclusively depicts African American women in her vibrant paintings. Her portraits exemplify the tenacious and daring attitudes that she sees as essential for leading a fearless and heroic life. With a background in batik fabric making, Charles has translated her strong sense of pattern and color onto canvas. The details in each of her portraits are carefully considered, including the subjects’ clothing and their environment. Charles describes her ongoing work as a celebration that “uplifts the self-esteem of African American women.” Further, “each painting focuses on the expressions that represent our history, expectations, self-image, and the essence that lies behind the façade of society’s perceptions.”
