ALEX BERNSTEIN

Alex Gabriel Bernstein literally grew up in a family of glass artists so it is no surprise that he decided to pursue the art of glass as his career. He has spent time as head of the glass department at the Worcester Center for Crafts in Massachusetts and has also taught at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Rochester Institute of Technology, The Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass, Penland School of Crafts and Pilchuck Glass School. Alex returned to his hometown of Asheville, North Carolina, in 2007 to set up his studio and focus on creating sculpture full-time.

Alex holds an MFA in glass sculpture from the School for American Crafts at RIT. He has recently mounted solo shows at Chappell Gallery in New York, Sandra Ainsley Gallery Toronto, and Prism Contemporary Glass in Chicago. Alex is also represented at SOFA New York, SOFA Chicago, and PalmBeach3 by Chappell Gallery. His work is held in many collections, including those of the Corning Museum of Glass, Glasmuseum Frauenau in Germany, the Burchfield-Penney Art Center in Buffalo, Rochester Institute of Technology, Mellon Financial Corporation, Wachovia Corporation and the Bascom-Louise Fine Art Gallery.

"Alex Gabriel Bernstein presents a bold and refreshing exploration of visual form and story telling. Bernstein skillfully combines metaphor with the impact and optical quality of glass. His cast glass sculptures provide the viewer with intimate narrative landscapes, drawn from light, form and color." - Priscilla Hope, Hope Gallery

"Alex Bernstein's cast glass leaves a strangely tragic impression, as though he were investigating in a normally merry medium the shape of human melancholy.
... The small pieces seem to me somber and noble, more sculptural and, given the small format, monumental than I am used to in the medium." - David Hopes, Asheville Citizen Times
